| The
National Park protects coral and rock reefs in 4500 hectares of
ocean around Isla Ballena, south of Uvita. From "Punta Uvita"
heading southeast, the park includes 13 km of sandy and rocky
beaches, mangrove swamps, river mouths, and rocky headlands.
The park has a great wealth of scenic beauty, such at the beaches
of grey sand at Ballena and Bahia fringed with lush vegetation,
mainly coconuts trees, beach almonds, mahoes and poros.

Other attractive sites are the Uvita tombolo, which is a rocky
platform that just out into the sea and is exposed at low tide,
and the rivulets that are formed in the cliffs. The coastal habitat
of beaches, mangrove swamps, estuaries, rivers and ravines attracts
resident and migratory birds, such as the Northern boat-billed
heron, little blue heron, white ibis, greater yellowlegs, turkey
vulture, and more. The sandy beaches are the nesting sites of
olive ridley and hawksbill turtles during May to November. Between
December and April the humpback whale migrates from Alaska, Baja
California and Hawaii to tropical and subtropical waters; the
humpback whale is an endangered species. The climate is very hot
and humid, with an average temperature of 27.5ºC and average annual
rainfall of 3500-4000 mm.
